In the subjects consisting of 21 pregnant women volunteering for painless delivery the concentration of mepivacaine in maternal and neonatal blood was determined in case of epidural analgesia in labor. The result indicates that 67% of the dose of mepivacaine infused into the maternal epidural space was detected in the maternal blood immediately after delivery. As for the fetal blood about 1/2 of the mepivacaine in maternal blood was transferred into the umbilical venous blood through the placenta, and 85% of the transferred was detected in the umbilical arterial blood after fetal circulation. The concentration of mepivacaine in neonatal blood gradually decreased with the lapse of time. However, considering the concentration gradient and the data for 24hours after birth, mepivacaine is supposed to remain within the body for a rather long time.
