Fifteen pregnant women volunteering for painless delivery were subjected to the determination of the concentration of bupivacaine in maternal and neonatal blood in the case of epidural analgesia in labor. The result shows that 53.7% of the dose of bupivacaine infused into the maternal epidural space was detected in the maternal blood immediately after delivery. As for the fetal blood about 1/3 of the bupivacain in maternal blood was transferred into the umbilical venous blood through the placenta, and 81% of the transferred was detected in the umbilical arterial blood after fetal circulation. In the neonatal blood bupivacaine of the concentration similar to that in the umbilical arterial blood was detected for 10 hours after birth, and minute as the dose was, it was detectable for 24 hours.
