The effect of temperature on the clonal life span measured in number of fissions was investigated in Paramecium tetraurelia. Every six cell lines were respectively maintained with triplet daily reisolation culture at different temperatures. A cell line which had been extinct earlier was replaced with a set of three cells from another surviving line cultured at the same temperature, and six cell lines were always maintained as long as possible at a temperature. The longestlived cell divided 200 times at the high temperature (30℃), 244 times at the middle temperature (25℃) and 310 times at the low temperature (20℃). This suggests that a lower temperature tends to elongate the clonal life span measured in number of fissions.
