In this paper the author discussed about distribution and locational changes of factory and town milk supply dairy farms in the Auckland region and tried to make clear sustainability of dairy farming location. The location of factory milk supply dairy farms expanded outward and moved out to peripheral areas of this region, because dairying environments were deteriorating with the development of subdivision, the increase of property tax and the expansion of residential areas. Although the property tax and land values were more expensive with the expansion of urban and residential areas, some parts of dairy farms remained to supply town milk because of the more profitable price of it, the maintenance of quotas and the higher equity of town milk supply dairy farms. Other town milk supply dairy farms expanded outward, so that most of these dairy farms have taken the place of the factory milk supply dairying and other livestock farming with obtaining quotas at opportunities of the ownership change. At the level of dairy farming, the factory and town milk supply dairyings have been developed as intensified the mutual linkage among elements such as the tradition of pastoralism, the suitable land for grass cultivation, the market of dairy products, dairy farming on land use, and the dairy farming policy and strategy. The conversion of the factory milk supply dairying into the town milk one is very flexible, if the element of the political system such as policy and strategy is added to the linkage of the factory milk one. The political system has been mainly made decisions by the mutual linkage of elements such as quotas, land use zoning, changes of ownership, property tax and land value. Furthermore, dairy farming system has been usually nested in pastoral farming system which has been nested in national land use system. Generally speaking, sustainable location of dairy farming has been hierar-chically supported by pastoral farming, dairy farming and political systems.
