Spectral Narrowing of Cladding-Pumped High-Power Tm-Doped Fiber Laser Using a Volume Bragg Grating-Pair

Narrow-linewidth and high-power operation of a cladding-pumped Tm:fiber laser has been demonstrated using a pair of volume Bragg gratings (VBGs) for effective spectral narrowing. The laser yielded 113 W of diffraction-limited continuous-wave output at 1990 nm with a narrow linewidth of ${\sim}2.2$ pm (full width at half maximum) for 279 W of launched pump power, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the narrowest linewidth demonstrated to date from high-power Tm:fiber lasers using VBG technique. The lasing slope efficiency with respect to the launched pump power at 972 nm was ${\sim}43$%. Prospects for further spectral narrowing and widely tunable operation are considered.
