SSEA-1, -3, -4 は胚発生に伴い発現が変化することで知られている糖鎖抗原マーカーである。SSEA-1 は糖タンパク糖脂質どちらにもみられるが,SSEA-3 と -4 は通常はスフィンゴ糖脂質のみにみられ,ラフトマイクロドメインの構成分子となる。ラフトマイクロドメインの生化学的解析や共焦点レーザー顕微鏡による観察は,これまで主に培養細胞でなされており,哺乳動物初期胚でのラフトマイクロドメイン像は検出されていない。筆者らは,新規抗 SSEA-4 単クローン抗体(Mab)6E2 を使って生きたままのマウス初期胚の SSEA-4 の動態を解析した。SSEA-4 は割球表面を自由に且つ迅速に動く一方で,一部は細胞内部へも取り込まれるなど,その動きはダイナミックである。胚表面の SSEA-4 を中心とするラフトマイクロドメインの時-空間的変化は,マウス胚初期発生においても,ラフトマイクロドメインが重要な働きをしている事を示唆するものである。
