• Essence of engineering education is acquirement of professional knowledge and skills for engineering. From viewpoints of time and motivation for the knowledge and skill acquirement, the education in Japanese colleges of technology is discussed in comparison with universitys engineering education. The double tracking system of engineering education is available no matter how many students may go on to a university from a college of technology. Cultivating ability to put the knowledge to practical use is important in the engineering education of the colleges of technology.
