Boron Isotope Fractionation in Column Chromatography with Glucamine Type Resins

Glucamine type resins have specific affinity toward boric acid and borate ion. Various studies of chromatographic separation of boron isotopes have been carried out, but few have addressed effects of base polymer skeletons. In this study, we used three glucamine type resins, which have different base polymer skeletons: synthesized GMA-DVB-Glu, commercial Diaion CRB02 and Chelest Fiber GRY-L. They were packed in chromatographic columns (1 m length×1 cm I.D.). They were subsequently evaluated for properties of boron isotope separation by band, breakthrough and reverse-breakthrough operations. The GRY-L showed larger fractionation for boron isotopes than other resins. In a 1 m column operation, the GRY-L showed fractionated 11B enrichment fraction (δ10B=−219‰) at the breakthrough process and 10B enrichment fraction (δ10B=288‰) at the reverse-breakthrough process from a NIST SRM 951 boric acid. Enrichment factors at the front part and rear part were calculated from clearly enriched fractions. The GRY-L yielded enriched 10B over 1.10 times’ natural abundance in the rear part at 1 m column reverse-breakthrough operation. The GRY-L is promising as a packing material of column chromatography for boron isotope separation.
