Many traditional crafts inherited by minority tribes in Viet Nam are disappearing from the mountainous areas due to the changes taking place in their daily life. Two surveys in 119 and 1999 investigated the following crafts -(1) silver metal works, (2) bamboo crafts, (3) woven and dyed fabrics, (4) pottery, (5) blacksmith products, (6) craft paper, and (7) stick incense. The paper highlights their marketability in light of possible future preservation and promotion. The first three crafts can find potential markets applying their traditional values. The last three may be fading out as the demand diminishes. The crafts of (2), (3) and (4) have good prospects of transforming into innovative crafts. The paper identifies the common problems and elaborates the possible solutions for necessary action. Implementing a master plan study is one the recommendations of the second survey and the Vietnamese Government completed it under JICA's technical cooperation program in 2003.
