Theory of non-destructive inspection (NDI) of ceramics damaged through machining process, i. e. grinding, was derived using the simultaneous probability density function for flaw-size and fracture location based on fracture mechanics and competing risks theory. It was found that the threshold value of scratch crack in NDI should be changed depending on the stress state, but independent of grinding direction.
