Numerical Analysis of Dynamic Behavior at Start-up of the Thermal Diffusion Column for Hydrogen Isotope Separation

A computational code is developed to analyze non-steady concentration profiles of the thermal diffusion column. Numerical analyses for HT-H2 were performed for the thermal diffusion column with an effective height of 1, 500 mm, a hot wire of 0.15 mm and a cold wall of 15 mm in radius. The initial concentration of HT-H2 was uniform in the column where a steady-state flow field was already developed. The results were compared with the experimentally obtained data reported in the previous paper. The numerical and experimental transient responses of mole fraction of HT in start-up agree well each other. It is observed that almost constant gradients of concentration of HT is formed first at the top and bottom at the column, and then the concentration distribution with keeping almost the same gradient moves to the steady state one which satisfies the material balance between feed and withdrawals, when we start the operation with the column filled with a gas mixture of the same concetration as that of the feed.
