By comparison with a double column model, a double layer model was concluded not to be suitable as a permeation model in principle. Maxwell′s equation which has been used to study the permeability of two components membrane with phase separation structures, was found to be introduced from the basis of the double layer model. Then Maxwell′s equation was considered not to be used for the analyses of the permeabilities.The following modified Maxwell′s equation was introduced on the basis of the double column model.P=Pa{(Pa+2Pb)-(Pa-Pb)Vb}/{(Pa+2Pb)+2(Pa-Pb)Vb}where P, Pa and Pb are the permeability coefficiects of the membrane, component A and B, respectively, and Va and Vb are the volume fractions of A and B, respectively.The validities of these equations were investigated by the data of the oxygen and nitrogen permeability coefficient of EVA modified PDMS membranes by authors and also of the water permeability coefficient of PES-phenoxy polymer blends by Swinyard et al..
