The literature suggests that the fi eld of sport business management belongs to sport studyand consists not only of sport-oriented theoretical fi ndings from an academic perspective, butalso of unobservable knowledge and industry experiences from a practical perspective. Thepurpose of this paper is to( 1) defi ne the fi eld of sport business management as an academicdiscipline and as a practical fi eld, (2) explain the link between the sport industry and sportmanagement education specifi cally at the university level,( 3) provide a deeper understandingof the unique aspect of sport business management in relation to sport study that includessport philosophy, history, and sociology, and (4) identify the current roles of sport businessmanagement based on Chalip’s (2006) six managerial topics in contemporary society. Thisstudy builds a conceptual foundation based on previous research in divergent disciplines thatare helpful for addressing some new insights and challenges in the field of sport businessmanagement. The conclusions derived from the study provide numerous starting points ofresearch, education, and practice in the management of sport-oriented businesses.
