(1) Using the young trees of English walnuts, Japanease walnuts, peaches and apples, the tolerance to shading was observed by covering the plant-body with bamboo blinds through the growing season, namely, to the young shoot elongation, the shoot branching off, the flower buds percentage to leaf buds, assimilation, the water content in the leaf, shoot and root, lengths of roots, and shoot and root growth in dry weight. (2) The number of the shoot branching off, leaf buds, and the flower buds percentage to leaf buds were diminished. (3) The development of the shoot base and the elongation of the shoot were retarded by covering the plant-hody to a extreme, but by light covering the elongation of the shoot on certain kinds of fruit young trees was accelerated. (4) The root growth was retarded more severely than the shoot growth by covering the plant body. (5) The covering the plant-body with bamboo blind diminished the leaf number, but enlarged the leaf area. (6) The covering the plant-body retarded the assimilation and increased the water content in the leaf. (7) Apples and chestnuts were less resistant and English walnuts, Japanese walnuts and peaches were comparatively resistant to shading.
