In resent years it is well known that the growth of the secondary forest in Karamatsu is inferior than that of first generation, but many remains to be studied on this problem from the soil scientical point of view. So we have investigated the physical and the chemical properties of both the superior soil and the inferior one of the secondary forest in Karamatsu. The experimental results we obtained are summarized as follows: 1) The remarkable differences are recognized between the superior forest soils of the second generation in Karamatsu and the inferior ones, when the configuration of the ground, soil profile and soil type are compared. Namely the superior soils are situated on the inclined place, and these soil types are dry to a certain extent, and development of Ao layer, especially F layer was comparatively favourable, and propagation of soil mycelium was remarkable. On the other hand, inferior soils are situated on the even or the hollow place, and these soil types are a little wet. F layer was very thin and soil mycelium was not propagate. 2) As regards the physical properties, the superior soils contain a large amount of gravel or coarse sand, small amount of fine sand comparatively small volume of air saturated condition are also large in these soils. On the contrary the inferior soils contain a large amount of clay, and small amount of gravel and coarse sand. Lower layers are massive, and volume of air in saturated condition was small. 3) As regards the chemical properties, the superior soils of second generation, showed lower total carbons, lower C-N ratios, smaller exchangeable acidity, hydrolytic acidity, higher pH value, more exchangeable calcium and potassium content than the inferior soils. However the chemical properties of the bare lands, which belonged to the inferior soil and showed the wet soil type was similared to those of the superior soil. 4) Even in the secondary forest, the physical condition of which is inferior, the growth of the first generation was recognized to be very superior judging from the condition of stumps. From the fact above mentioned, it may be concluded that only the physical properties of the soils is not the factor determing the inferior growth of the secondary forest soil. 5) Judging from the configuration of ground and loose structure of the soil, the soil showing the superior growth of the second generation, seemed to be deprived of nutrient. Consequently the inferior growth of the second generation may not be due to the deficiency of nutrient, but to the accumulation of growth inhibiting substance. This view was supported by the fact that the soils showing superior growth are situated on the inclined place and its structure was loose and loss the growth inhibiting substance.
