細胞表面には細胞外の刺激を受け取る「受容体（レセプター）」という構造がある。受容体の活性部位にホルモンや神経伝達物質などの生体分子（リガンド）がぴったりと取りつくと，細胞内のシグナル伝達系の連鎖反応が始まり，細胞の活性が変化する。
