On the 13th of February, 2002, arson and destruction struck Christian houses at Katung in Bali, Indonesia. I was given the opportunity to conduct research and to investigate the situation of the Christians in Bali during the period 2007.2.15 to 2007.2.28, supported by a joint research project `Change in a community in Indonesia' undertaken with the research institute of this university. Here I report on an attack on Bangli church believer's houses and the circumstances that lead to this violence. In addition, I consider the situation of religion in Bali based on a local inspection and information gathered from local people, also newspaper articles based on local knowledge. My investigation is also coupled with my personal experience in Bali as a leader of "the international work camp in Indonesia". On the 17th of February, 2007, I visited the Katung village of Bangli region. The rural scenery appeared incredibly calm and quiet on the outside. I wondered where the ghastly incident had taken place. I interviewed two victims. They said, "In this village, the Hindus had previously maintained cordial relations with the Christians . However, that day, a villager changed suddenly and it was then that tragedy struck". On the other hand, there is a possibility that the case was deliberately planned, according to a newspaper article. I wrote about this incident, covering various aspects, including the correspondence with the police, support given to the victims by the administration, the cause of the gruesome incident, a solution to resolve the crisis, and the views held by the Bali community and the administration drawing references from articles in an influential local daily Bali Post. If the articles and the administrative correspondence are to be believed, then, the custom and the common law are the key factors that could have triggered the unfortunate incident, and there is a problem with the implementation of law and order in the state. I considered the following based on interviews and the newspaper articles. 1. Problem of Adat (meaning : custom, practice, tradition, institution and convention) 2. Confrontation between religions 3. Political problem Consequently I wondered if it would be possible to reach a solution of peaceful coexistence through the following measures : 1. Implementation of democracy and education on democratic systems 2. The generous minds of the people of Bali 3. Eradicating poverty / Efforts of the government to reduce the economic gap 4. Unity in diversity 5. Promoting dialogue between different religions 6. Social contribution by the Christian Church. This case was taken up by a local news agency and has caught the public attention, so the people who suffered the assault are now being compensated. The houses has been reconstructed a house and life is slowly returning back to normalcy with the help of the aid given by the state government and the Catholic society. I have a sense of fear for them at the back of my mind, as they continue with their daily lives without being afraid even after the dreadful incident. This sums up my report, wishing and hoping that such an incident will never occur again in thefuture.
