The present study investigated whether blood hemoglobin level and iron nutritional status are impaired during endurance physical training. Five healthy males (age (mean ±SEM), 20.4 ± 0.4 years; height, 169 ± 3 cm; weight, 64.3 ± 4.3 kg) participated in a metabolic experiment comprising a 4-day exercise period (Ex) preceded by a 6-day non-exercise period (non-Ex). Subjects were fed a diet that satisfied recommended dietary allowances for Japanese during the non-Ex. Extra energy consumption during the Ex was supplied by increasing all foods in proportion to total energy intake. During the Ex, subjects exercised on a bicycle ergometer at an intensity of 50% maximal oxygen intake for 100 min/day. Red blood cell count was significantly decreased, but blood hemoglobin level was unchanged during the Ex. Serum total iron binding capacity, iron and ferritin levels were also decreased during the Ex, but each parameter changed within its reference interval. These results suggest that anemia is not induced by endurance physical training under the dietary condition which supplies additional energy consumption with balanced diet.
