• The dried Chinese yam is known as “San-yaku" in Chinese medicine. The tertiary function is thought to be caused by mucilage in the Chinese yam tuber. There are a number of unclarified points regarding the relationship between the tertiary function and chemical structure of the mucilage, the present report therefore aims at presenting basic data on three kinds of sample (H066, H067 and H068) which were prepared from Chinese yam and “San-yaku", by Maruzen pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd. The results obtained were as follows:Protein contents of H066, H067 and H068 indicated a low rate in comparison with the mucilage. Mannan and glycoprotein which constitute mucilage gave a low molecular weight by gel filtration. The 32kDa glycoprotein which was a minimum composition unit, was preserved in three samples. The main factor which glycoprotein showed was the low molecular weight was that sialic acid isolated from oligosaccharide.
