Beginning with the 2002 academic year, the English Program at Kanazawa Institute of Technology has been reorganized under the Essential English Center with the aim of revitalizing English education at KIT. Under the EEC, a combination of innovations in curriculum, course administration, and staffing has been instituted in an effort to more effectively utilize the key available resources: student time and effort, staff time and effort, and curriculum (class) time. The various changes result in an increased focus on fostering student initiative, reaching specific objectives, and supporting individual study. One of the more salient changes in class management for both students and instructors is the institution of standardized daily testing in class. Results of a survey of students suggest that the advantages of this system significantly outweigh the disadvantages. Assessment of this and other aspects of the program is ongoing.
