The moss flora of the Amami Islands (Lat.27°-30°N, Long. 128°-130°E, with the highest peak 694m a.s.l. in Amamioshima I.), Ryukyu Archipelago was investigated. There are recognized 207 species (including subspecies and varieties counted as species), based on examination of specimens and review of the literature. 39 species were newly found for the Islands. Phytogeographical analysis of 209 species showed the moss flora to comprise 101 East Asian, 71 paleotropic, 6 pantropic, 12 panboreal, and 19 other species. The moss flora was compared with those of some other regions in Japan and proved to be most closely related to that of Yaeyama Islands, also placed in the Ryukyu Archipelago, where tropical elements far exceed East Asian elements in number. No endemic species were recognized for the area other than 3 species and one variety which have not been taxonomically evaluated since their original descriptions early in this century.
