Southeastern Shikoku represented by the Yanase district is well-known for the forest dominated by Cryptomeria japonica. A synthesis survey of forests in this district, however, reveals that Tsuga sieboldii, which has wide ecological amplitude, is most common throughout the district, but sometimes there are developed remarkable pure stand of Cryptomeria japonica. Besides the above, there are such noticeable conifers as Chamaecyparis obtusa, Sciadopitys verticillata, and Pseudotsuga japonica which tend to from the edaphic or topographic climax. Among these, Pseudotsuga japonica attracts particular attention because of its sporadic occurrence in the narrow distribution area. Pseudotsuga japonica (SHIRASAWA) BEISSNER is regarded as a relict plant known only from this district and the Kii Peninsula in southern Honshu. This tree in Shikoku is mostly found in the upper part of the warm temperate zone and is generally accompanied with Tsuga sieboldii. It is to be noted that ericaceous shrubs, such as Pieris japonica, Lyonia ovalifolia var. elliptica, and Rhododendron serpyllifolium, are abundant in the Tsuga sieboldii-Pseudotsuga japonica forest, while there are evergreen broad-leaved trees and shrubs exemplified by Quercus (Cyclobalanopsis) salicina, Q. (C.) sessilifolia, Illicium religiosum, Cleyera japonica, and Eurya japonica. Similar floristic composition is also found in the Chamaecyparis obutusa-Sciadopitys verticillata forest and the Tsuga sieboldii-Cryptomeria japonica forest. Table 7 shows the fact mentioned above, and it also suggests the ordination of communities recognized here. The fact that coniferous trees are commonly found in the warm and cool temperate zones is one of the characteristics of the forest vegetation of Japan. In this respect, it is worthy of notice that an example of complicated mixed forests in Japan is presented in this district.
