A novel single-ended distributed fiber sensor based on stimulated Brillouin scattering with 3 cm spatial resolution is proposed and experimentally validated. This technique, which is based on a modulated optical long pulse consisting of two sidebands, requires access to only one end of the sensing fiber. The probe wave is obtained by Fresnel reflection at the cleaved end of the fiber. The spatial resolution is only limited by the fall time of the long pulse and the bandwidth of optoelectronic components. Our technique is simpler, and to the best of our knowledge, much better than other single-ended techniques in terms of spatial resolution.
