Enhancement of Red Persistent Luminescence in Cr

Bi<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>was proved to be an effective codopant to enhance red persistent luminescence in Cr<sup>3+</sup>-doped ZnGa<inf>2</inf>O<inf>4</inf>spinel. The Cr--Bi-codoped ZnGa<inf>2</inf>O<inf>4</inf>phosphors showed about 10 times higher persistent luminescence intensity than the Cr-singly-doped phosphors. The radiance (in mW sr<sup>-1</sup>m<sup>-2</sup>) of persistent luminescence in ZnGa<inf>2</inf>O<inf>4</inf>:Cr,Bi phosphors was comparable to that in commercialized SrAl<inf>2</inf>O<inf>4</inf>:Eu,Dy phosphors. Increases of Cr<sup>3+</sup>absorption and photoluminescence were also observed in the Cr--Br-codoped ZnGa<inf>2</inf>O<inf>4</inf>sample. The obtained results suggest that Bi<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>may play a critical role in stabilizing Cr<sup>3+</sup>in ZnGa<inf>2</inf>O<inf>4</inf>spinel.
