Optical Blue-Shift of the Light-Emitting Solar Cell

An optical blue-shifting mechanism is reported for a heterostructure light-emitting solar cell (LESC), which has two absorbing layers and an emitting layer to act simultaneously as a photovoltaic device and an optical up-convertor. A detailed balance analysis for a combined system of an LESC and a single-junction solar cell gives a maximum efficiency of 43.9% for a band gap of 1.90 eV. Validity of the analysis has been demonstrated by comparing an analyzed result with that obtained from Shockley and Queisser's detailed balance model at a specific condition.
