Spin Correlations in MnCu Spin-Glass Alloy

To elucidate the causes of the strong suppression of the magnetic long-range order in MnCu spin-glass alloy, spin correlations were studied using neutron scattering for a Mn73Cu27 single crystal. Magnetic diffuse scattering was observed around the $(1,0,0)$, $(1,1/2,0)$, and $(1,1,0)$ reciprocal lattice points in the $(0,0,1)$ scattering plane. The experimental data were compared with the wave-vector-dependent susceptibility calculated using the effective exchange coupling parameters up to the fourth neighbor. In addition to the spin frustration induced by the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic coupling in an fcc antiferromagnet, farther-neighbor exchange coupling parameters also satisfy the special conditions for the spin frustration, resulting in the strong suppression of the magnetic LRO of MnCu alloys with a relevant Mn concentration. In cooperation with the random distribution of Mn atoms, the spin-glass state with a high freezing temperature is considered to be realized.
