In order to demonstrate the applicability of a pulsed self-seeded Ti:sapphire laser oscillator with a pair of diffraction gratings, which has been developed to perform laser isotope separation, the two-step photoionization of rubidium (Rb) using this oscillator with output set at 780 nm (Rb D2 line) and a UV laser (the third harmonics of the Nd:YAG laser) was studied. Distinct ion signals corresponding to 85Rb and 87Rb isotopes were observed at resonance lines corresponding to their first excitation frequency. These results show that Rb atoms were photoionized with high selectivity, and that the developed laser configuration is suitable for laser isotope separation.
