Mechanoluminescence of Europium-Doped SrAMgSi2O7 ($\text{A}=\text{Ca}$, Sr, Ba)

Phosphors with various color mechanoluminescence (ML) europium-activated SrAMgSi2O7 ($\text{A}=\text{Ca}$, Sr, Ba) were reported in this paper. The results reveal that the ML emission bands are located at 440, 460, and 499 nm for SrBaMgSi2O7:Eu, Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu, and SrCaMgSi2O7:Eu, respectively, which is similar to the photoluminescent (PL) peak. This indicates that ML is emitted from the same center of Eu2+ ions as PL. The ML intensities of Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu and SrCaMgSi2O7:Eu are nearly the same, while that of SrBaMgSi2O7:Eu is very weak and is only about 20% of that for Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu. The thermoluminescence results display that the different trap concentrations existing in these phosphors are responsible for the difference of ML intensity. In addition, all the ML intensities proportionally increased with the increase of mechanical load, which suggests that these phosphors can be used as sensors to detect the stress of an object. Furthermore, blue and blue-greenish ML emission for Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu and SrCaMgSi2O7:Eu can be observed by naked eye when these samples are compressed.
