The effect of the alignment layer properties on the observed threshold voltage ($V_{\text{th}}$) of carbon-nanotube (CNT)-doped liquid crystal cells is investigated. The $V_{\text{th}}$ of cells with [3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]octadecyl-dimethylammonium chloride (DMOAP) as the alignment layers increases as the CNT concentration increases, whereas cells with polyimide as the alignment layers show no change in $V_{\text{th}}$. A simple model is proposed to explain these experimental results.
