While the surface effect can be ignored in macroscale structures, it plays an important role in nanoscale structures. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is a useful method to evaluate this effect, but is not applicable to mesoscale problems due to the excessive computing time required. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a continuum-based size-dependent model to predict the thermo-mechanical properties of thin films at the nanoscale. Surface parameters in the macroscale continuum model are determined by matching them to the results of MD simulations.
