In order to achieve magneto-optical hybrid recording, a new surface plasmon head was proposed, and the intensity distribution of the optical near-field was calculated using a finite-difference time-domain method. It was confirmed that the head has sufficient resolution and efficiency for 1 Tbit/in.2 recording. Simulation confirmed that the head has very high efficiency, so the feasibility of direct coupling the head with a laser diode was investigated. As a result, the practicality of the lensless head was confirmed, and all parts for reading and recording could be placed on a pico-slider.
