The Kretschmann configuration, in which gold nanoparticles with diameters from 10 to 40 nm are present on the surface of an Au film, is used to excite surface plasmon. The surface roughness on the gold film is equivalent to that of a distribution of gold nanoparticles with the same shifting and broadening of the attenuated total reflection (ATR) curve from that of the ATR curve for a bare Au film. The equivalent rms roughness values and optical constants for various size and surface density distributions are derived from the measured ATR curves.
