We propose an adaptive third-order Volterra filter to compensate for the higher-order nonlinearities of high-linear-density optical disks. We report the performance of the adaptive third-order Volterra filter applied to a read-only Blu-ray Disc (BD-ROM) with a capacity of 31.3 Gbytes. The bit error rate (bER) dependence of the radial- and tangential-tilt angles was investigated. The adaptive third-order Volterra filters for partial response $(1,1,1)$ and partial response $(1,2,2,1)$ lowered the bER, and improved the radial- and tangential-tilt margins. We confirmed that the adaptive third-order Volterra filter is effective in a high-linear-density optical disk.
