The under-gate cathode structure using carbon nanotubes as the emitter has a great advantage in manufacturing because of its simple structure and fabrication. If the field emission display enters into the market of high-resolution flat panel displays, beam focusing could be one of the main problems to overcome. In this study, we investigate the characteristics of a nested cathode structure that is based on the under-gate cathode structure but differs in that the source of electron emission is surrounded on four sides by its own cathode electrode to which the lowest electric potential is applied. We examine beam focusing for the nested cathode through the calculation of beam trajectory by computer simulation and confirm the properties by fabricating a real panel.
