In order to investigate the influence of the mechanical properties of pure titanium on high-strain, high strain-rate deformation, high-velocity-impact experiments were performed with streamlined projectiles. The projectiles were launched at an impact velocity of 300 to 850 ms-1. All the experiments were carried out at normal impact. The experimental data presented includes perforation limit velocity, time variations in both bulge height and perforation during projectile penetration, and the microstructure of recovered samples. These experimental data reveal that the resistance to penetration and the mechanism of perforation in the vicinity of the perforation limit depend strongly on the metallurgical structure of samples, and that the resistance to impact penetration is improved by control of the sample fabrication process.
