One-Laser-Two-Beam Method for Double Overwrite Speed in Rewritable Phase-Change Optical Discs

A new method for high-speed overwriting in rewritable phase-change optical discs was developed. In this method, a single laser beam is emitted from a single laser diode and is divided into two beams, which are focused on different positions on the same track of a disc. One of the beams is the prespot for crystallizing amorphous marks, while the other is the main spot for overwriting the marks. The experimental results show that this method can double the overwrite speed —more than 200 Mbps— of the optimized speed for one-beam overwrite.
