The optical absorption spectra of cobalt-doped AgIn5S8 and CuIn5S8 single crystals grown by a chemical transport reaction method were investigated at 7 K. The absorption peaks due to the Co2+ impurities are well explained in terms of the $T_{d}$ crystal field and the second-order spin-orbit coupling effect. The values of $Dq$ and $B$ calculated from the observed spectra show that the $d$ electron delocalization is slightly larger in the host crystal CuIn5S8 than in AgIn5S8. This may be caused by the shorter tetrahedral bond length of Co–S in CuIn5S8:Co2+ than in AgIn5S8:Co2+.
