We investigated the adsorption of 1,1′-diethyl-2,2′-isocyanine iodide (PIC) onto micrometer-sized mica flakes. It was found that the fluorescence spectra of the so-formed J-aggregates depend on the adsorption time and the flake size. With increasing adsorption time a shift of the fluorescence maximum from 586 to 583 nm was observed. Furthermore, it was found that the fluorescence maximum also depends on the size of the mica flake on which the PIC was allowed to adsorb. Flakes with a diameter of 10 μm show a maximum at 583 nm, whereas smaller flakes have a maximum at 586 nm. Photobleaching experiments showed that irradiation leads to a shortening of the J-aggregates.
