We study the switching characteristics of a soliton coupler with a bent waveguide. The bent soliton coupler has very sharp switching characteristics because of the threshold effect of soliton emission from the nonlinear waveguide. In our numerical analysis, we consider the nonlinearity saturation and the linear loss, since those might be very important in the analysis and design of the nonlinear waveguide devices. The simulation results show that by using the bent structure, we can reduce the threshold power for the soliton emission. Employing the bent structure compensates for the increase of the soliton emission threshold power due to the nonideal Kerr effect. The bent structure would be useful for the emission of the spatial soliton with a lower threshold power.
