We have developed a new readout method using an optical system with a differential numerical aperture between forward and return optical paths (i.e., a differential numerical aperture (NA) method). This method realizes jitter merits for larger NA and wide tolerance for smaller NA@. We will show calculated and measured results of jitter and tolerance for a 4.7 GB-digital versatile disk-random access memory (DVD-RAM) disk system due to the differential NA method.
