We discuss how strongly the thermoelectric figure of merit Z is influenced by carriers in a particular energy range. From the knowledge of the energy dependence of the functional derivative of Z with respect to differential conductivity, it is shown that the carriers in the low and high energy range have a harmful effect on Z, while those in the middle energy range have a favorable effect on Z. This result enables one to understand the various methods of improving the efficiency of thermoelectric energy conversion from a unified point of view.
