Generally, it is very important to control the three-dimensional characteristics of the refractive index of retardation film in order to improve the viewing angle characteristic of a supertwisted nematic-liquid crystal display (STN-LCD). It is noted that the refractive index of film-thickness direction nz should be larger than that of the direction perpendicular to the drawing direction ny where that of the drawing direction is nx. Recently, we found that in-plane and out-of-plane birefringence of novel functionalized side-chain phenoxy polymer film can be controlled by drawing and poling. Thus, we have demonstrated that drawing and poling can produce the ideal retardation film for a STN-LCD with a relationship between refractive indices such as nx>nz>ny and nz=(nx+ny)/2. The color of the film satisfying the above conditions between two polarizing films did not change as a function of tilt angle and azimuth angle. In fact, the observed retardation R of this film is constant up to a 40° tilt angle against the front view of the retardation film without reference to the azimuth angle.
