The contribution of Co concentration in the writing layer to the read/write characteristics of our novel magneto-optical disk structure with an exchange-coupled double-layer (ECDL) is investigated. Raising the Co concentration of the TbFeCo writing layer increases the Curie temperature from 170° C to 210° C and changes the recorded mark formation process from the regular magnetization copying mode to the inverse magnetization copying mode. Computer simulation based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation confirms that the GdFeCo readout layer does not contribute to the mark formation process near the Curie temperature (∼210° C) for an ECDL disk comprising the writing layer with higher Co concentration. This is because the effective magnetic anisotropy field (H k-4πM s) for the GdFeCo readout layer at around 210° C becomes negative and the easy axis lies in-plane.
