Tilted homeotropic alignment with a good uniformity on an anodic porous alumina (Al2O3) film was realized with liquid crystal (LC) molecules adsorbed unidirectionally in a magnetic field. The LC pretilt angle can be controlled by the surface topology of the anodic porous alumina film and by the direction of the magnetic field at a virgin LC adsorbed on the film. This tilted LC alignment remains very stable even when subjected to external forces such as a heat cycle treatment or irradiation by a projection light source. An LC light valve with the porous alumina film is particularly promising for use in high-quality projection systems because of its high reliability and good uniform alignment.
