Organic electrophosphorescent-light-emitting devices with multiple-quantum-well (MQW) structures have been fabricated. Each quantum well is made of a film of the phosphorescent dye 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethyl-21$H$23$H$-porphine platinum (II) doped into tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum which act as a potential well and 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline as a potential barrier. Saturated red emission was obtained, and the effect of the MQW structure on the efficiency of the devices with different numbers of MQWs was investigated. The experimental results suggest that the device with seven quantum wells has the optimum efficiency. Compared with the maximum efficiency of the conventional heterostructure device with a 42-nm-thick emitting layer, that of the device with seven quantum wells is higher by about a factor of two.
