The absorption spectral changes of trans-4-[4-(dimethylamino)]stilbazolium toluenesulfonate (DAST) nanocrystals dispersed in decahydronaphthalene were observed under magnetic fields in three different optical configurations. The absorbance only increased in the Voigt configuration, in which the light polarization was parallel to the magnetic field, indicating that the absorption transition moment of the nanocrystals is parallel to the magnetic field. From the arrangement of the aromatic rings in the crystals, the nanocrystal orientation under the magnetic field was concluded to be due to the diamagnetic anisotropy of the crystals.
