Diabetes mellitus induces profound complications including cardiovascular disorders. In the present study, we administered streptozotocin (STZ) to rats (type 1 diabetic model), and from the day after, black soybean extract (BE: boiling aqueous solution) was given once a day for 4 weeks. The rats were then killed and the thoracic aorta was excised for uniaxial tensile test to determine Kelvin model parameters (serial elastic (K2) and viscos (η) ones, and elastic one (K1) in parallel to them). The results showed that plasma insulin and blood glucose, which became considerably low and high, respectively, in STZ-administered rats, were little affected by BE, and that K1 was affected little by STZ and BE; K2 was decreased by STZ, and not changed by BE; η was little changed by STZ, but lowered by BE. The results suggest that BE modified viscoelastic properties of the thoracic aorta in type 1 diabetic model rats.
