We have demonstrated the growth of polymer brushes from a surface textured urushiol thin film. Thermal imprinting was done on initiator-immobilized urushiol thin film, and surface-initiated atom-transfer-radical polymerization (ATRP) of (2-(Methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethylammonium chloride (MTAC) was conducted from it. The obtained surface showed super hydrophilicity because of the nature of polyelectrolyte polymer brushes on textured surface. Since urushiol thin film can form on variety of substrates, the concept shown here could be a universal approach for surface modifications of substrates.
