Studies were made of a hair from the scalp of a young healthy man. The hair had suddenly changed from black to gray during formation. The following results were obtained.
1. Melanin granules were little recognized in the cuticle of the gray part near the hair root, but they were observed in the cortex of the same hair.
2. The hair medulla was observed in the black part of the scalp hair tip and in the gray part near the hair root. The hair medulla in the gray part especially was seen to include destroyed hollows.
3. A close relation was found to exist between the formation of the hair and number of cuticle layers. The hair medulla remained when the speed of formation of the hair was more rapid. That is to say, the cuticle layers decreased in number when the hair formation was rapid.
4. Black hairs or melanin granules did not develop from the hair root whose hair medulla was destroyed.
5. The proximal end of the cuticle cells towards the center of the hair revealed a shape like the teeth of a comb. That is to say, the end of the cells had several cell drocesses.
