Mapping the electrical resistivity distribution or monitoring the changes in electrical resistivity with time at landfill sites can provide substantial information related to the performance and safety of landfills. Electrical resistivity measurement has potentials to be applied in: (1) characterizing geologic setting at proposed landfill sites; (2) assessing soil and groundwater contamination nearby landfill sites; (3) locating fracturing, erosion or damage of landfill cover and bottom layer systems; and (4) investigating migration of water or leachate within landfills. This study is focused on the development of gridnet leak detection system for landfills and evaluating the effect of temperature on the electrical resistivity of waste medium. A pilot scale study was conducted to verify the applicability of the gridnet system for 2-dimensional spatial monitoring of landfill sites. Sensitivity of the two-electrode sensor was investigated according to the electrode spacing and the electrical properties of target contaminant. In addition, laboratory study employed a column test device submerged in a temperature controlled water tank in order to measure the resistivity of wastes at the temperature range of 20 to 60 degree celcius. Thermodynamic coefficient of waste medium was determined and a simple equation was derived for compensating the electrical resistivity values against temperature.
